• The names of the domains;
• The names of the Primary (PDC) and Backup Domain Controllers (BDC) in the domains involved; and,
• The IP addresses of these PDCs and BDCs.
  

Other Requirements ...

The DCs from each domain need to be able to establish RPC connections to the DCs in the other domain to establish the trust so it needs to be able to find it. There are two ways to allow the machines to locate each other:

1. Add the PDC and BDC from the other domain to the LMHOSTS file; or,
2. Configure the other domain to use WINS and replicate data between the WINS servers of the two domains.

Required Steps ...

Once the two domain controllers can locate each other, the trust relationship can be established and verified using User Manager. This is a two step process:

Step One

• Start User Manager for Domains;
• From the "Policies" menu, select "Trust Relationships ...":

  

• Click the Add button next to the "Permitted to Trust this Domain:" window:

  

• Enter the name of the domain; and,
• Enter and confirm a password to be used to set up the trust:

  

  
  

Now, call the administrator of the other domain and give them your password. At the same time, get their password.

Step Two

• Click the Add button next to the "Trusted Domains:" window:

  

• Enter the name of the domain; and,
• Enter the password that the remote administrator used to set up the trust:

  

  You should receive a message indicating that the trust relationship was successfully established. Occasionally you may receive a message indicating that the trust relationship was not able to be verified. This latter condition may occur if your primary domain controller was not able to contact the remote PDC. This may be due to the remote PDC being off line or as a result of it not being defined locally in your domain.
